  1.         A Quick Note From The Designers
  2.  
  3. First of all, thank you very much for buying Diablo. We have 
  4. worked hard to create a game that you will want to spend many, 
  5. many hours playing. To further that end, we have added some 
  6. features in Diablo that may not be apparent at first glance.
  7.  
  8. Diablo is a VERY different play experience depending on which
  9. character class you choose. The tactics and strategies employed 
  10. by the Warrior, for instance, would be sheer folly for a 
  11. Sorcerer to attempt. Many high level items and spells will only 
  12. be useable by certain classes. After you defeat Diablo, try 
  13. another game with a different character class. 
  14.  
  15. You won't be disappointed.
  16.  
  17. Diablo also randomly generates every level of the labyrinth, 
  18. including the rooms, hallways, lights, shrines, fountains, 
  19. cauldrons, pools, special themed areas, treasures and monsters. 
  20. The list just goes on, but what it boils down to is each time you
  21. enter a new level within the labyrinth, you will have new things 
  22. to do and discover.
  23.  
  24. Finally, Diablo takes on an entirely different feel when you are in
  25. a multiplayer game.  The interaction that occurs, the new
  26. strategies and the difference in how you have to think all make for
  27. a very exciting and very new experience.

  118.      CASTING SPELLS USING THE SPEEDBOOK
  119.      Left-clicking on the "readied spell" button will open the 
  120.      "Speedbook" which allows you to select a skill or spell for 
  121.      immediate use.  To use a readied skill or spell, simply 
  122.      right-click in the main play area.
  123.

  125.      USING ARCHITECTURE AS A TACTICAL POSITION
  126.      There are many place in the labyrinth that the character can 
  127.      use to his advantage when in combat. Two basic examples of 
  128.      these are barrels and doorways.
  129.  
  130.      Barrels not only are sources of hidden treasures, but they 
  131.      also provide excellent blocking terrain for ranged attacks. 
  132.      Since barrels can be have spells or arrows fired over them, 
  133.      a sorcerer or rogue properly positioned behind a cluster of 
  134.      barrels can fight back a large group of oncoming creatures.
  135.  
  136.      Doorways can also be used very effectively for singling out 
  137.      monsters when encountered in large groups. If you are swarmed 
  138.      by a large group of creatures in the labyrinth, an excellent 
  139.      tactic is to position your character just on the other side 
  140.      of a doorway and take them on one at a time as they enter 
  141.      into the doorway.

  143.      There are numerous other areas within the labyrinth that can 
  144.      be used as strong tactical positions by players who are 
  145.      looking for them. Keep your eyes open and your weapons ready!
  146.  
  147.  
  148.      RESISTANCE AND IMMUNITY
  149.      Certain monsters in the labyrinth are resistant or even immune 
  150.      to different types of magic. After killing several monsters of 
  151.      the same type, your character will learn the resistances and 
  152.      immunities that these creatures have. Unique creatures (those 
  153.      whose names are displayed in gold text) may also have 
  154.      resistances or immunities. While your character does not know 
  155.      the immunities or resistances of a unique monster, he will 
  156.      know if some type of immunity or resistance exists. 
  157.  
  158.      Should you have difficulty killing a unique monster with an 
  159.      attack such as firebolt, the creature may have a resistance 
  160.      or immunity to fire based attacks. Try using an electrical 
  161.      (lightning) or magical (stone curse) attack instead.
  162.

  164.      I LOVE THIS GAME, BUT IT'S A LITTLE TOO TOUGH...
  165.      Depending on the items you find, spells you learn and 
  166.      creatures you encounter, each game will play very 
  167.      differently - even with characters of the same class. 
  168.      Because of the randomness of Diablo, some labyrinths will be
  169.      more challenging than others.  Until you are an expert 
  170.      spelunker, you may find a dungeon too difficult.  If this is 
  171.      the case, you can use the 'New Game' option to take your 
  172.      character (complete with stats, experience, and inventory) 
  173.      into a new labyrinth where you can fortify him with additional 
  174.      gold, items, spells, and experience from earlier levels.

  178.  2.  Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0 & Microsoft DirectX
  179.  
  180.      Diablo is a Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 game that utilizes
  181.      Microsoft DirectX. DirectX is included on the Diablo CD and 
  182.      can be installed from the Diablo setup program.
  183.  
  184.      Windows NT 4.0 does not require that you install Microsoft 
  185.      DirectX as it is already part of the operating system.
  186.  
  187.      For users who are running both Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0
  188.      on their systems, please note that multiplayer characters 
  189.      created within one will not be available while playing 
  190.      under the other OS (i.e., characters created while playing 
  191.      under Windows 95 are not available while you are playing 
  192.      under Windows NT 4.0)

  204.  3.  Video Cards
  205.  
  206.      S3 Vision 968: If you have a video card with a Vision 968 
  207.      chipset (Diamond Stealth 64 3000 Series, #9 Motion 771, etc.) 
  208.      you will need to obtain the latest DirectX drivers from your 
  209.      video card manufacturer.  As of the release date, many of 
  210.      these cards were still not supported under DirectX 3.0.
  211.  
  212.      Tseng chipsets: If you experience problems, use the drivers 
  213.      that come with DirectX 3.0. The drivers that are supplied by 
  214.      Tseng are not compatible as of release date.
  215.  
  216.      S3 Virge3D: If you have a card with the Virge 3D chip, use the 
  217.      Virge driver from the DirectX 3.0 CD and NOT the OEM driver, 
  218.      or the driver from the video card manufacturer.
  219.  
  220.      3Dlabs GLINT Delta: As of the release date, these new graphics 
  221.      adapters have DirectDraw drivers that do not work with some 
  222.      applications.  You may experience occasional "hard freezes" 
  223.      that will cause your computer to lock up.  Specific drivers 
  224.      that support DirectX may be available in the future.
  225.  
  226.      Matrox Millennium: If you have a Matrox Millenium card and are
  227.      experiencing random lockups or palette glitches, please
  228.      download the latest version of the video driver from their
  229.      website.  Also, If you are running in a "dual desktop" mode 
  230.      with two Matrox Millennium adapters and two monitors, you must
  231.      change the desktop size in the display properties to 1280x1024
  232.      or less before running Diablo.

  240.  4.  Sound Cards
  241.  
  242.      Aztec Sound Galaxy: You may notice music skipping on some 
  243.      systems. This is due to incompatibilities between Windows
  244.      DirectSound and the Aztec drivers. As of the release of
  245.      Diablo the drivers that Aztec supply do not correct this.  
  246.      Specific drivers that support DirectX may be available 
  247.      in the future from Aztec.
  248.  
  249.      Diablo requires a Windows 95 compatible sound card. If you
  250.      should encounter any problems with your sound card, make sure
  251.      that all current Windows 95 and DirectX compatible drivers are 
  252.      installed and, if necessary, contact your sound card 
  253.      manufacturer.

  261.  5.  Virtual Memory Settings
  262.  
  263.      Diablo may need to use more RAM than is present on your system.
  264.      Windows 95 automatically takes care of this by using what is
  265.      known as "Virtual Memory" -- it uses space on your hard disk
  266.      to simulate the memory it needs and swaps data back and forth
  267.      from your hard disk as required. Windows 95 allows you to 
  268.      manually set the amount of hard drive space it uses for 
  269.      Virtual Memory.
  270.  
  271.      In our experience, we have found that letting Windows 95
  272.      manage your Virtual Memory is easiest and best for performance. 
  273.      To let Windows 95 manage your virtual memory, go to the 
  274.      Windows 95 START menu, select SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, then 
  275.      double-click SYSTEM, click PERFORMANCE, FILE SYSTEM, 
  276.      VIRTUAL MEMORY and then select "Let Windows manage my virtual
  277.      memory settings (recommended)".

  279.      If you are running low on virtual memory, you may need to free 
  280.      up space on your hard drive.

  285.  6.  Multiplayer Diablo
  286.  
  287.      6.a.  Playing Diablo over Battle.net
  288.  
  289.      Battle.net is an Internet gaming service provided by Blizzard
  290.      Entertainment which allows players to meet up, challenge other 
  291.      players, and join games, all without paying any special 
  292.      connection charges.
  293.  
  294.      In order to use Battle.net, your computer must have the TCP/IP 
  295.      protocol installed, and must provide TCP/IP support for 32-bit 
  296.      applications.  If you connect to the Internet using Windows 
  297.      Dial-up Networking, and browse the web with Netscape Navigator 
  298.      version 2.0 or higher or Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0, 
  299.      then you probably already have the correct TCP/IP software 
  300.      installed.  However, if you connect to the Internet with a
  301.      proprietary dialer or browse the web with Netscape 1.x or 
  302.      another 16-bit web browser, then it is likely that your system
  303.      is not configured to support 32-bit applications.  In this 
  304.      case, you should contact your Internet Service Provider to 
  305.      obtain updated software.
  306.  
  307.      "I can chat with other users, but I can't join a game."
  308.  
  309.      In order to play in a multiplayer game, your system must be 
  310.      able to receive packets of game data (technically, UDP packets) 
  311.      from other players.  Some service providers don't allow 
  312.      incoming data of this type, or don't provide users with a 
  313.      unique Internet address to which packets can be sent.  If you 
  314.      are unsure whether your provider is blocking this type of 
  315.      connection, please contact them for more information.
  316.  
  317.      If you are trying to play Diablo through a computer that is 
  318.      directly connected to the Internet through your employer or 
  319.      other organization, you should be aware that some companies 
  320.      block certain types of incoming data to their networks.  To 
  321.      play multiplayer games on Battle.net, you may have to ask 
  322.      your network administrator to allow incoming UDP packets on 
  323.      port 6112.

  325.      6.b.  Connecting to Battle.net through America Online
  326.  
  327.      To connect to Battle.net through AOL, you will need to
  328.      use the 32-bit Windows 95 AOL client software. If you are 
  329.      unsure as to whether you already have this, please contact 
  330.      AOL directly.
  331.  
  332.      Also, AOL's connection to the Internet is often very slow, 
  333.      which can make multiplayer games between AOL users and users 
  334.      of other service providers almost unplayable.
  335.  
  336.      6.c.  Playing Diablo over a Local Area Network
  337.  
  338.      Diablo supports multiplayer gaming over IPX-compatible 
  339.      networks.  If your computer is connected to a local area 
  340.      network, but you are not sure whether it is IPX compatible or 
  341.      not, ask your network administrator.
  342.  
  343.      "I have IPX but I can't join a game, or people can't join my 
  344.       game."
  345.  
  346.      Diablo will not play across network segments.  If you are not 
  347.      sure whether your network is segmented or not, contact your 
  348.      network administrator.
  349.  
  350.      You should also verify that all computers on the network are
  351.      using the same frame type.  You can change the frame type that
  352.      a computer uses in the Network section of the Control Panel.
  353.  
  354.      For more detailed information on setting up and diagnosing
  355.      troubles with a Local Area Network, please see the Network.doc
  356.      file on the Diablo CD.
  357.  
  358.      6.d.  Playing Diablo over a Modem
  359.  
  360.      To play Diablo over a modem, you must ensure that your modem 
  361.      is configured properly in the Microsoft Windows Modems control 
  362.      panel.
  363.  
  364.      "My modem won't dial a number or answer an incoming call."
  365.  
  366.      Here are some things to try:
  367.       - Disable any messaging software such as Comm. Central or any 
  368.         other answering machine software.
  369.       - Disable any Fax software that is installed on your system.
  370.       - Close any other programs which may be using the modem.
  371.  
  372.      You should also verify that your modem's INIT string is 
  373.      correct.  Your modem manufacturer will be able to help you 
  374.      with this.  For more detailed information on setting
  375.      up and diagnosing troubles with a Local Area Network, please
  376.      see the Modem.doc file on the Diablo CD.
  377.  
  378.      6.e.  Playing Diablo over a Serial Cable Connection
  379.  
  380.      You can play Diablo head to head using a null modem cable.  
  381.      Simply connect the null modem cable to a free serial port on 
  382.      each computer and select Direct Cable Connection from within 
  383.      Diablo.  One player should then select Create Game; the other 
  384.      should wait until the game is running, then select Retry 
  385.      Connection to join it.
  386.  
  387.      "My direct link setup isn't working."
  388.      "I can get multiplayer games started, but they lock up during 
  389.       gameplay."
  390.  
  391.      You must ensure that the serial port you are using is 
  392.      correctly configured in the Windows control panel.  Also, 
  393.      verify that it is not being used by other applications, and 
  394.      that it does not have an IRQ conflict with another serial 
  395.      port, modem, or mouse on your system.  If you are unsure how 
  396.      to do this, read the file Serial.doc on the Diablo CD.
  397.  
  398.      "Is it true that Diablo supports up to four-player serial 
  399.       games through daisy-chained serial cables?"
  400.  
  401.      Yes.  However, this process is complicated and is recommended 
  402.      only for technically advanced users.  For more information, 
  403.      see the file Serial.doc on the Diablo CD.

  407.  7.  Software Compatibility

  409.      7.a.  Microsoft PowerToys
  410.  
  411.      If you have the Microsoft PowerToys system extensions 
  412.      installed you may experience a black screen upon booting 
  413.      Diablo, although the sounds may still be audible. If this 
  414.      happens, you should remove the Microsoft PowerToys while 
  415.      playing Diablo. 
  416.  
  417.      7.b.  NEC Merlin
  418.  
  419.      If you are using a NEC computer with the Merlin assistant, 
  420.      you may experience video problems when starting the game. 
  421.      If this happens, disable Merlin by removing the icon from your
  422.      Startup menu and rebooting your computer.  For additional
  423.      information, contact NEC technical support at (800) 632-4554.

  427.  8.  Video Playback

  429.      If video playback is slow or choppy on your system, you can
  430.      adjust the size of the playback window using the VidSize
  431.      utility, which is installed in the Diablo directory.

  435.  9.  Updates, Patches & General Troubleshooting
  436.      
  437.      You can check Blizzard's web site (http://www.blizzard.com) 
  438.      for the latest information on updates and patches for Diablo.  
  439.      Also, whenever you connect to Battle.net, your software will 
  440.      automatically be upgraded to the latest version.  For more 
  441.      information on Battle.net, see the "Playing Diablo over 
  442.      Battle.net" section in this file.

  444.      IMPROVING GAME SPEED
  445.      There is a possibility of slower game play on slower systems 
  446.      while music is playing. For better performance, the music 
  447.      volume should be set to zero.  Music and sound volumes may be 
  448.      set by using the Options menu while playing Diablo.
  449.  
  450.      You can change the cache size of your CD-ROM to increase 
  451.      performance and decrease CD load times. This can be done by 
  452.      opening the START menu from your task bar, selecting SETTINGS 
  453.      and then opening the CONTROL PANELS folder. Now open your 
  454.      SYSTEM properties file and select the PERFORMANCE tab. Click 
  455.      on the FILE SYSTEMS button and select the CD-ROM tab. Every 
  456.      CD-ROM uses different cache sizes and access patterns, so you 
  457.      may need to experiment with these to find the optimum setting 
  458.      for your CD-ROM. If you have less than 16MB of RAM, you will 
  459.      want to set your cache size to as low as possible. If you have 
  460.      more than 16MB of RAM and are experiencing slowdown, you can 
  461.      increase cache size if possible.
  462.  
  463.      Another method of increasing performance in Diablo is to add
  464.      RAM to your computer if you are playing on an 8MB system. 
  465.      Windows 95 uses about 2.5 MB of your available RAM, and
  466.      this causes Diablo to use virtual memory. This process is 
  467.      slower than using RAM directly, and while the speed of your 
  468.      processor is a factor in the performance of the game, 
  469.      additional memory can greatly enhance your game speed on 
  470.      baseline systems.
  471.  
  472.      PROGRAM CONFLICTS
  473.      Diablo is a Windows 95 program that is capable of running 
  474.      while other programs are running in the background.  For
  475.      best performance we suggest you shut down all other programs  
  476.      (including your Microsoft Office toolbar) while playing.

  478.      MULTIPLE CD CHANGERS
  479.      Diablo supports the use of multiple CD-ROM drives and CD 
  480.      changers on a single system, so please feel free to play 
  481.      your Diablo CD from any properly configured CD-ROM drive.

  485. 10.  Uninstalling
  486.  
  487.      10.a Uninstalling Diablo
  488.  
  489.      Diablo can be uninstalled from the Autorun menu or through
  490.      the Diablo group in your start menu. When uninstalling Diablo, 
  491.      you will be asked if you also wish to delete your saved games. 
  492.      Checking this box will delete all saved games of Diablo. 
  493.      Should you wish to keep your saved games on your hard drive, 
  494.      DO NOT check this box when prompted.
  495.  
  496.      For users who are running both Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0
  497.      on their systems, please note that you must uninstall Diablo 
  498.      from the same OS where it was installed (i.e. if you install
  499.      Diablo under Windows 95, you must uninstall from Windows 95
  500.      as well).

  503.      10.b Uninstalling Battle.net
  504.  
  505.      To uninstall Battle.net you will need to open the START menu 
  506.      from your task bar. Open the CONTROL PANELS folder and select 
  507.      ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.  You will see Battle.net in the program 
  508.      list and to remove it, select Battle.net and click the 
  509.      Add/Remove button.
